Today finds us two weeks on since last blog and now back in Gladstone sporting damp skins ..OK ok, sweating like pigs requiring several showers a day truth be known..feel totally gross when pushed to exert...yeesh.
Backing up to Sydney saw Sarah fly off to Perth and have good news to report there..the little gem fell into a very well paying job almost straight away working for a Geology based firm in Gold Mining business, which she initially turned down but they wouldn't hear of it & offered her more money and the chance to make job 20% hers meaning she doesn't need to be bound to office in Perth whole time but can head out to desert where she has gone today to meet crew like geologists she'll be working with..lucky girl.
Before leaving Sydney we caught up for dinner with our first lovely Sydney host family then headed up to Newcastle soon after staying again with our friend Mary who also works up there and has another home there. We struck some very hot temps there..mid 40's, now that is quiet freaky first time round to feel breeze that feels like its fed by a fire..whew. We did a bit of picture hanging for Mary as she'd just moved back in, tootled around Newcastle discovering quite a gem in the city..beautiful beaches and some truly lovely old buildings.
We had fun leaving Mary's, I asked Bevin to come out and help me lower clothesline..he swears the door shut behind him of its own accord..funny didn't do that to me..so there we were locked outside , no phones, no shoes, no keys...after more than half an hour trying all angles to get into Mary's burglarproof house an obliging neighbor took us across town to local hospital to find Mary to get her keys...much to her amusement
Late start at 11am and an 850k ride ahead back to our friends Shane and Kylie at Mudgeeraba on Gold Coast..daunting but as we had decided setting off, we'd just see how we felt, but were going so well and didn't want a repeat of getting caught in thunderstorms so twas head down and bum up..quite literally at times got there at 8.30 to find we'd dropped back an hour with time difference ..being 7.30pm(takes a bit to get used to a country where time changes so much)
We had booked into a dinner and show Sat 5th, called Draculas that our family had paid for collectively for our Xmas pressie, wonderful idea, so along with Shane & Kylie enjoyed the offbeat show.... rocky horror type humor etc, with yes the crack at the Kiwi's in the audience. On entering the restaurant had to go on the ghost train..things leapt out of course haha..yeah I yelled with fright!
Paid for our keep waterblasting and oiling hardwood decks at Shane and Kylie's before heading back to Gladstone Wednesday a week ago doing another long day 600k's this time, but with two rest area stops and a McDonalds refueling stop got back here before dark.
We have been busy this last week getting all documents and cards/licenses organized to get jobs here for a while, so have now done the Industry required White cards ..Work health and safety, took good 3 hours or so ..brain drain, went off to sleep dreaming Health and Safety..that is sooo sad!
Have now got Queensland drivers licenses and go for our Yellow Medipasses next week so we can work on industrial sites here..the greenie in me can't tell you where, I hang my head Lloyd :-/ truly I do.
Gladstone has been kind to us with weather though we do melt daily. We've been lucky managing to miss all the worst nature has thrown at this poor coast of late..we were in Newcastle when Yasi assaulted coast further North.
Had a nice visit to the Gladstone hospital day before last..frightened the hell out of Bevin when Lara called an ambulance after I collapsed with severe abdominal pain in the morning..bad reaction to panadeine and neurofen on empty stomach they think(had them night before with no effect, but woke with headache and body aches so on advice took more before going back to bed then 1/2 hour later whammo!), so pink ladies -foul tasting pink gunk comprised of xylocaine and mylanta- which didn't kill it but knocked a wee edge off followed by Morphine that also didn't knock it was all on menu..disgusting is all I can say..but by days end it abated and I could go home...never going near those pills again!!
Bevin & Felicity
